Lohri history: Lohri is celebrated on winter solistice & belief is Lohri night is the longest one. Belief goes post Lohri, days start increasing. But scientifially this is not true as winter solistice is on 21 – 22 December every year. Lohri, the Harvest festival of India is celebrated with great enthusiasm & pomp in North India especially by Punjabis but it is also celebrated in different parts of the country, as different festivals. Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Sukarat in Madhya Pradesh, Uttarayan, Bihu and Makar Sankranti, all interestingly coincide with Lohri. Among the Sindhi community Lohri Festival is known as Lal loee. To celebrate Lal loee children gather sticks from their grand parents and aunts to do bonfire in the night.

In order to mark the change of season, as winter chills begin to ebb, Lohri festival is celebrated on 13th January every year. Lohri is a festival of great social significance, rather than religious significance. It is celebrated with a bonfire, as friends and family gather around it. How do you plan to celebrate Lohri festival this year?

!!! BUZZINTOWN WISHES ALL A VERY HAPPY & WARM LOHRI !!!
***WISH YOU A HAPPY PONGAL ***
Pongal is a three-day celebrations across Tamil Nadu. Well, it may be a harvest festival but it works at elevating spirits! It is that time of the year when the entire state is in a celebratory mode. Pongal also marks the beginning of the auspicious month of Thai in Tamil calendar.

The festival gets its name from the special rice that is cooked on this day called Pongal. On the first day of Pongal, rice is cooked in milk and sweetened with jaggery, in earthen pots on a wood fire. The pots are allowed to brim over and overflow, to symbolize prosperity and plenty in the coming year.

In olden times Pongal would be cooked early in the morning with the entire family gathered around. As the pot would brim over, loud chants of ‘pongal-o-ponga’ would be heard.

Among other things, Pongal is also about shopping for new clothes, decorating the home with earthern pots, rangoli and mango leaves. The pots are often painted in auspicious colours and placed in the shade of freshly cut sugarcane stems.

Given its robust agrarian character, cattle is revered and venerated. Cattle is decorated and worshiped and they traditionally symbolise the pillars of any agrarian fabric.

The second day of Pongal is dedicated to cattle, and is called Maattu Pongal. Cows, bulls and other farm animals are bedecked in colourful brocade or embroidered fabric. Their foreheads are smeared with vermillion and sandalwood paste, the horns are decorated with colourful tassels, tinkling bells and beads after which they are worshiped with arti thalis and lighted lamps.

Traditionally a bull race is held on this day, called ‘jallikattu’ Ganesh and Parvati are also venerated on this day, and sweet Pongal is offered as prasad.

The third and last day of Pongal is also called ‘Kaanum Pongal’. This day is dedicated to Sun God and is otherwise a day for feasting, merrymaking and leisure. Prayers are offered to the Sun God, invoking his blessings and benevolence for the coming year and a bountiful harvest. Sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being and long life, on this day.

Traditionally, this is also a day when younger members of the family seek the blessings of the olden family members.

Food is served in banana leaves and left outside every house for birds to feed on.

Times are a changing; city people take this a day of rest and celebration and day to catch up on family and friends.

Ways of doing things may change, but the essence of Pongal remains…

Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious Hindu festival celebrated in all parts of India with great devotion & fervor. On this day, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn. It falls on the 14th of January every year according to the Solar Calendar. Makar Sankranti festival is known by various names such as in Uttar Pradesh, Sankrant is called ‘Khichiri‘, in Southern parts of India Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Pongal & in Punjab as Lohri or Maghi.

Pongal History: Pongal or Thai Pongal is an ancient Harvest festival of South India particularly Tamilians. The history of Pongal dates back to Sangam Age i.e. 200 B.C. To 300 A.D. Pongal is a three day festival and can be called as a replica of North Indian Harvest Festival, Baisakhi which is celebrated in April. During the month of January grains, fruits & vegetables are in abundance in South India. Espeically rice, sweet potatoe, red pumpkin, white pumpkin, & other local veggies. When nature is offering everything in plenty then why i should not make merry, sing, dance & celebrate. People cook various Pongal special recipes for three days & on fourth day like to go for outing.

The first day of Pongal is called Bhogi Pongal and is a day for the family & friends. Surya Pongal is the second day which is dedicated to the worship of Lord Surya, the Sun God. On this day, Sun God is offered boiled milk and jaggery. On the third day of Pongal, cattle known as Mattu is worshipped hence the name Mattu Pongal. Cattle are given a royal treatment on Mattu Pongal by affectionately bathing them, polishing and painting their horns in bright colors and decorating them with garlands of fresh sweet smelling flowers.
